Gift basics

How to order a personalized gift without mistakes

Avoid spelling errors, low-resolution photos, and late delivery when ordering custom books, prints, engraving, and keepsakes.

A personalized gift can be the most memorable present someone receives. It can also go wrong in ways a ready-made item cannot: a misspelled name, a blurry photo, or an order that arrives after the event. Most custom orders cannot be returned, so the checks happen before you pay.

Choose what to personalize

Names and dates are the simplest choice and the hardest to get wrong. Photos and long messages add meaning but need more care. Decide whether the gift will be displayed, used daily, or kept in a drawer. Something used every day, such as a mug or a keychain, can carry a short phrase. A book or print can hold a longer message.

Get the spelling right

Copy names from a reliable source, such as a message they wrote, instead of typing from memory. Check nicknames, hyphens, apostrophes, and accent marks. Read the preview out loud, letter by letter. Then read it a second time later, after a short break. If the store lets you, download or screenshot the preview for your records.

Use the date format the recipient uses. 03/04 means March 4 in the United States and 3 April in much of the world.

Use a photo that will print well

Use the original file from the phone or camera, not a screenshot or a picture saved from social media. Those copies are often compressed and print blurry. Many stores warn you when a photo is too small for the chosen size; take that warning seriously. Choose photos with good light and faces that are in focus. Check how the store crops the image so heads and feet are not cut off.

Plan for production time

Custom items are often made to order. The delivery date includes production time and shipping time, and stores often list them separately. Add both together and leave a few extra days. Around holidays, production queues get longer and shipping slows. If the date is close, look for a store that offers a digital preview you can give on the day, with the finished item arriving later.

Know the return terms

Most stores will not accept returns on personalized items unless they made an error. Read the policy before ordering. Keep your order confirmation and preview screenshot. If the item arrives with a mistake that does not match your preview, contact the store with photos right away.
