Find out which system they play on before buying gaming equipment. A Windows PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch can need different accessories. Write down the exact system or controller model; a broad “works with consoles” claim leaves too much to guess.
Start with their current setup
Ask what they use now and what they would like to improve. A worn-out controller gives you a clear direction. A keyboard-and-mouse player who rarely uses a controller gives you a reason to consider a different gift.
A photo of the existing equipment can help identify a model, connector, or available desk space. If you are unfamiliar with the system, ask someone who plays with them to help check the item you are considering.
Controllers: read the supported-system list
Compare the exact product name with the manufacturer’s supported systems and connection instructions. Closely named versions can have different compatibility. Check whether the required receiver or cable is included and whether any features require additional software.
The 8BitDo Ultimate 2C Wireless manual, for example, describes Windows and Android connection modes. Read the manual for the specific model you are buying. Do the same check for controller grips: the shape must fit the recipient’s controller.
Headsets: check each connection
Find out where the headset will plug in: a controller, computer, or another audio device. Read what each cable does and whether an adapter is required. Some headsets use USB to power lighting while a separate connector carries audio.
Ask whether they need a microphone and prefer wired or wireless audio. Comfort also matters: consider glasses, headphone weight, and how long they usually play. If they already love their headphones, look for a different upgrade. Review the return terms when fit is difficult to judge online.
Choose around what you know
| Possible gift | Useful information | Common extra to check |
|---|---|---|
| Controller | Exact platform and preferred connection. | Receiver, cable, or charging equipment. |
| Headset | Audio connection, microphone needs, and comfort preferences. | Required audio adapter. |
| Desk mat | Usable width and depth around their equipment. | Space for the mouse and monitor base. |
| Game-themed item | A game or character they actually like. | Authorized design and space to display it. |
When you cannot check the hardware
Choose something that requires fewer technical details, such as an authorized pin from a favorite game. Even a desk mat needs a quick measurement. Leave controllers and headsets until you know enough to confirm compatibility.
