How to find a good gift under $25

Choose a thoughtful gift on a small budget by focusing on consumables, upgrades to small daily items, and personal touches.

A small budget works best when you choose a narrow target. A $20 version of a big gift often disappoints. A $20 upgrade to a small thing they use every day can feel generous. Look for items where a modest price buys good quality.

Plan the whole cost

Set the limit for the total, not only the item. Shipping, tax, wrapping, and a card can add several dollars. Look for free shipping thresholds, pick-up options, or a store you already have a membership with. If shipping costs close to the item price, choose something you can buy locally.

Where a small budget goes far

DirectionExamplesWhy it works
Things they use upFavorite coffee, tea, hot sauce, candles, or bath products. They enjoy it without needing space to store it.
Small daily upgradesA better pen, a sturdy water bottle, a phone stand, or cozy socks.A noticeable improvement at a small price.
A bookA paperback by an author they love or a book tied to a hobby. Most new paperbacks fit the budget.
Hobby suppliesDice for a gamer, seeds for a gardener, or yarn for a knitter.Shows you know what they enjoy.
A small gameA card game for two or for a group.Gives you a reason to spend time together.

Add something only you could give

A handwritten note, a printed photo, or a short list of reasons you appreciate them costs almost nothing and is often the part people keep. Pair a small item with a personal detail: a mug with a note about the coffee shop you always visit, or a paperback with a bookmark marking a favorite passage.

Skip these traps

Avoid novelty items that are funny once and then become clutter. Be careful with very cheap electronics, which often have short lifespans. Check reviews from several sources and look at the return policy. A quality basic item is usually a better choice than a low-quality fancy one.

Group gifts and gift exchanges

For an office or family gift exchange, follow the stated limit closely. Going far over can make others uncomfortable. Choose something most people would use: a nice snack, a game, a candle with a mild scent, or a book with broad appeal. Include a gift receipt.

Before checkout

  • Compare the checkout total, not the list price.
  • Check the delivery date or plan to pick it up.
  • Add a gift receipt if the store offers one.
